Motor Carriers: Later this Month You Will Need a Login.gov Account to Access SMS
How you log in to SMS is changing. FMCSA is making access more secure by implementing multifactor authentication—a login method requiring two pieces of information to verify your identity. Later this month, you will no longer be able to use your Portal user ID and password, or your U.S. DOT Number and PIN, to access SMS. Instead, you will access SMS through the FMCSA Portal. For motor carriers, this will require a Login.gov account. For help creating a Login.gov account, visit the FMCSA website. Motor carriers can use the same Login.gov account they use to log in to FMCSA’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse to access the FMCSA Portal. Note that the email address in your Portal profile must match exactly with your Login.gov username (email address) to access the Portal.
Note: DOT users should refer to internal email notifications for specific instructions on creating accounts and logging in via government-issued PIV cards.
